I just finished reading “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire. This fantasy, fictional book had not been my normal read in the past. I was more into True Crime books and religious books, and I really had not had a desire for most fiction. On a whim I picked the book up, read the back and my imagination was sparked.
I was a bit leary about the book, I have always liked my fuzzy, cozy thoughts of OZ and of those cute Munchkins licking lollipops while they sang! I knew this was not the case for this book, it was a darker side, much darker side and an insight into how it pretty much all began.
I am christian and I found nothing wrong with this book, if you are a total prude you might blush on a page or two, but don’t worry, there is very little in sexual nature. This is more on the magical “witchy” side of things and how the witches came about. I do believe I’d get more flack from reading “The Shack” a fictional book about God then I would for reading about witches & magic in a fantasy world of OZ!
The book was a slow read for me at first, everything about it is great though. I think I had a tough time getting into it at first because this was not my tipical book and I had to keep reminding myself that it is ok to branch out and try new kinds of books. I really am glad that I read it, I am now looking forward to reading “Son Of A Witch” by the same author. And in case you are wondering I have not read “The Shack” yet, but I will be buying it as well.
